War Oratorio
Posting this on the 75th anniversary of VJ day (15.8.20)
War Oratorio was a Channel 4 commission, recorded and broadcast in 2007.
I (Philip) rehearsed with Mary King over 4 rehearsals in an auditioned non-professional (unpaid) choir of about 40. We recorded in Islington at the Angel Studios over two exhausting sessions. The orchestra and soloists recorded their parts in Brno (Czech Republic) so we had to work with a 'click track' (similar to a metronome) and occasional piano assistance. The filming took place in three war zones placing the film team in considerable danger. I think the resulting (BAFTA-winning) work is a striking and an excellent anti-war polemic. The music is modern and dramatic. The soloists, especially Maria Friedman, are excellent.
WARNING: This is an intense piece of about an hour's duration. Do not watch it if you are likely to be upset by images and stories of war.
