Tonic Jukebox History
WEEK TWENTY - GUEST DJs 3
This week we welcome another set of guest DJs who share music that reminds them of a particular person, place or event.
Some lovely stories here - thanks to all.

Monday July 27
Guest DJ Janice from Tonic 4 Colonel Bogey March (played by the Coldstream Guards) I will always associate this music with my Dad, Ernie. He was a Sapper out in India, Hong Kong and Burma during WW2 and was reluctant to talk about his experiences, but loved marching bands. I chose this as the music to leave his funeral. https://youtu.be/qfAvoELaktc |
Tuesday July 28
Guest DJ Daphne from Tonic 4 Habanera from Bizet's Carmen Early 1991, husband Stuart (as a huge surprise) got tickets for the Royal Opera House to see Carmen to celebrate our Silver Wedding. Our first opera outing. Agnes Baltsa as the immortal Carmen joined by José Carreras. (That’s the cake and icing!). I was completely overawed by the atmosphere of the opera house and the fact that we had 3rd row seats. I was so excited. The lights dimmed, the curtain was just about to rise when this ‘apparition’ flew in wearing a magnificent velvet cape and promptly took his seat next to me. It was Rudolf Nureyev!! He apologised for his lateness and we both settled down for a wonderful performance. Please play Agnes Baltsa singing Habanera. https://youtu.be/3X07FwuInNM |
Wednesday July 29
Guest DJ Anne from Tonic 1 You are the Sunshine of my Life by Stevie Wonder is the song I associate with my darling husband Melvyn. When we started the dance at our wedding, we realised very quickly that we were not doing the first waltz! This January we were presented with the '45'. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SbenaOqv4yQ |
Thursday July 30
Guest DJ Sue from Tonic 4 Elgar Cello Concerto in E minor, 1st movement Paul Tortelier playing at the Brighton Dome (photo attached) (I have played tymps there - magic!) The first movement was one of the set pieces for my Music O level and arguably, Paul Tortelier was the one to listen to, so I bought the record and listened to it avidly. So fast forward to about 20 years later when visiting my parents in Brighton, we read that Paul Tortelier himself was to be playing the Elgar at The Dome with the Brighton Symphony Orchestra, that very day. Strings were pulled (sorry) and my dad managed to get two house seats for me and my husband. I was so excited and held my breath as he played those first unaccompanied chords. Then, oh disaster, the orchestra sounded as though it was at the end of the pier, every entry was late they were not together at all. I felt embarrassed for the great maestro. Then an amazing thing happened, Tortellier's bowing arm started to become more exaggerated, the bow seemed to grow longer, although his beautiful playing didn't alter, I realised that he had actually taken over from the useless conductor. By about half way through the first movement the orchestra was back on track, I could sit back, relax and enjoy a fabulous performance! https://youtu.be/DPMPmqn113E Here's Tortelier playing the whole concerto: https://youtu.be/JAmZ8GgEP6A |
Friday July 31
Guest DJ Judi from Tonic 4 I would choose James Galway playing Annie’s Song on the flute. This always reminds me of times with my father (he died aged 70 in 1986). He was a local GP in Barnet and could pick up and play any instrument and played this often! His instrument of choice was a clarinet, but James Galway brings back happy memories of my father playing this song. He was also a keen angler as you can tell from the photo! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BkUpto_ohEc (just flute) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MiecGxSgPkE (with John Denver) |
Weekend August 1/2
Guest DJ Jean from Tonic 1 This is my friend Nellie. Whenever I hear the 3rd movement of Brahms violin concerto it reminds me of one afternoon in Paris when, arm in arm Nelly and I skipped through the Tuilleries la la-ing this tune. (Philip: I also love the Brahms violin concerto and found it difficult to choose a soloist. In the end I thought it was time we had a lady soloist and this one looks remarkably like Nellie, I think.) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bOx0eKhD9f0 |
