Tonic Jukebox History
WEEK TWO - Choruses
Monday March 23
Oklahoma!
One of the really great choruses from one of the really great musicals.
It has been said that Oklahoma was the first of the modern musicals.
The audience expected their musicals to start with a big chorus number.
When the curtain rose on the first night of Oklahoma! they saw a mostly bare stage with an old lady in a rocking chair.
In August 2017, about 100 Tonic members sang songs from Oklahoma! at the Royal Albert Hall.

A recording (3:40) from the current Royal Opera House production.
The superb Royal Opera orchestra with equally wonderful chorus.
Don’t be surprised if your emotions run away with you.
This starts part way through the piece.
For the whole thing try Spotify. Should be about 5 minutes.

The original cast from the wonderful 1987 London production.
“I went under sufferance declaring 'this is not my kind of show' and ended up in tears of emotion. Yes, I know, I often do. This remains one of my favourite musicals. Joyous, poignant, and thought-provoking.” Philip
