Benny Hill
From our friend Schon who is an Aussie (part of the Australian swim team at the Tokyo Olympics) and now lives in Toronto.
"Benny was a cousin of my Mother. Her Aunt I think was his mother, or Aunt of his. We just were told he was a cousin so as a kid, one doesn't question lineage, but I stayed with him, well in his house, in Bucks. He didn't actually live there, he lived in the BBC studios apartments. He looked after 3 ladies who, as kids in the war, were evacuated from London to Scotland and they survived, only to be orphaned and he took them in after the war ended. One, named Phoebe was crippled with Polio as a child. She and my Mum also correspond as pen-pals, also set up by him. I cannot remember the other ladies names. He was a decent and loving man who made sure I had everything I needed. It was because of him I got the bench job in the lab at Guys Hossie (hospital). He knew someone there, obviously in a hiring position, and that was my 'in' to work. Of course the summer that year was one of the coldest and wettest on record at that time, and after 6 months, the rain chased me out. I didn't see a lot of Benny and I was not allowed to use his real name. When I got the job at Guys he found me accommodation in Earls Court, a 4th floor walk-up as the commute from Aylesbury was then, darned near impossible to be at work by 7am. No direct train link then. It was bus to subway in the dark and rain then home via the same slower than todays route, going home."
